“Ada Bojana” is a river island located in the southeast of Montenegro, along the Albanian state border, at the point where the Bojana River meets the Adriatic Sea. It was created artificially and covers an area of 4.9 km².

According to tradition, Ada Bojana was created in the 17th or 19th century when a ship ran aground near two small islands after a storm – the sailing ship “Merito”. Over the years, river sediment accumulated on the wreckage of this ship and on two nearby islands, which first formed the coast and then the island. Over time, this island divided the Bojana River into two branches. During the Cold War, the Island was a military zone with strictly guarded borders. This means that some of its parts remain completely intact even today.

Ada Bojana has a triangular shape. It is washed by the Adriatic Sea on one side and the Bojana River on the other. The beach facing the sea is sandy and is about 3 km long. The beach and the seabed are covered with fine sand. The right tributary of the Bojana River separates the island from the 13 km long Ulcinj Velika plaža. The closest place is the village of Štoj, the city of Ulcinj.

Ada Bojana is covered with subtropical and Mediterranean vegetation, and some species of flora and fauna are unique in Europe. It is precisely the dense and lush vegetation that gives the island its Amazonian charm and, together with its unusual fauna, turns it into a special micro-ecological area. The beach is formed by dunes, and behind it are habitats unique in the entire Mediterranean. The ornithological importance of Ada Bojana is reflected, first of all, in the significant colonies of many species of nesting birds, such as spoonbills, small white herons, gray herons, yellow herons, etc. Another distinctive feature of Ada Bojana is the cows roaming freely around.

The island is the most famous tourist gem of Montenegro. The island has a special atmosphere, a nudist place, skillfully hidden from prying eyes, surrounded on two sides by the beautiful Bojana River and on the third by the clearest sea water. Many people say that the best advice for tourists wishing to come to the island is: “If at any point in your life you want to spend the summer holiday of your dreams in Adam and Eve costumes, Ada Bojana is definitely the right choice”.
